History of Reading News. Vol.XXI No.2 (1998:Spring) Rose-Marie Weber has alerted us to the following new books: Space Between Words: The Origin of Silent Reading, by Paul Saenger (Stanford University Press; 480 pages; $49.50); and White Supremacy in Children's Literature: Characterizations of African Americans, 1830-1900, by Donnarae MacCann (Garland Publishing; 274 pages; $65). Other books are Robertson Davies, The Merry Heart: Reflections on Reading, Writing, and the World of Books (New York: Viking Press, 1997) and Pamela Maria Smorkaloff's Readers and Writers in Cuba: A Social History of Print Culture, 1830s-1990s (New York: Garland, 1997). |
